Anthropic cuts Claude subscription access for OpenClaw users

Anthropic has announced a significant change regarding Claude subscriptions for OpenClaw users, effective April 4, 2026. The company will no longer allow Claude subscriptions to cover usage on third-party tools like OpenClaw, which has left developers scrambling for alternatives. Users who previously relied on their subscriptions now face the decision to purchase discounted extra usage bundles, switch to a separate Claude API key, or potentially abandon the platform altogether.

Boris Cherny, Head of Claude Code at Anthropic, explained that this decision was made as a capacity management measure due to the strain that tools like OpenClaw placed on their systems. The flat-rate access provided by Claude subscriptions was economically unsustainable, as it allowed third-party integrations to exploit the pricing model. Developers will need to adapt their agent workflows and consider the implications of these changes on their AI automation strategies moving forward.
